Fr Willie Doyle was a Jesuit military chaplain who was born in Ireland in 1873 and ordained a priest in 1907. After a very fruitful missionary life in Ireland, he volunteered to become a chaplain in the First World War. He served as chaplain with distinction and was famous for his bravery in the face of death and destruction. He was killed in August 1917 while rescuing wounded soldiers. When his private diaries were found after his death, they revealed a
hidden life of intense self-denial and of mystical prayer. Many people have been devoted to him in the centuries after his death, including saints like Josemaría Escriva and Teresa of Calcutta. Ultimately, he was a man who grew to love God and his neighbour so much that he was willing to die to save a soul or to save a life

Patrick Kenny lives in Dublin and is married with 6 children. He first became interested in Fr Willie Doyle 12 years ago; since that time he has been running a blog with daily quotes from Fr Willie’s writings and is the editor of “To Raise the Fallen: A selection of the war letters, prayers and spiritual writings of Fr Willie Doyle”, published by both Veritas and Ignatius Press. He is the President of the newly formed Father Willie Doyle Association, which seeks to promote devotion to Fr Willie and to work towards the opening of a Cause for his canonisation.
