Being out and about, but staying safe

Summer is officially here and it’s time to soak up the sun, have some fun, but most importantly, stay safe. As a gay man, summer may be the season you look forward to the most, but there are some things you need to keep in mind to ensure your fun in the sun doesn’t lead to any unwanted surprises.

Safe-Sex First

When engaging in sexual activities, it’s important to practice safe sex. This includes using a condom and other protection to avoid sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. However, safe sex isn’t just about protection. It’s also about being comfortable with yourself and your partner. Never feel pressured into doing something that doesn’t feel right, and never let anyone cross your boundaries.

Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

Exploring new places and meeting new people can be incredibly exciting, but always be aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye on your belongings and never leave your drink unattended. Don’t accept drinks from strangers and be cautious when someone offers to buy you a drink. Remember, drinks can be spiked with drugs without you even knowing it.

Protect Your Skin

The summer sun can be brutal on your skin, so don’t forget to protect it. Even if you want to show off your toned and tanned body on the beach, always use sunscreen with at least SPF 30. This will protect you from harmful UV rays that can cause skin damage and skin cancer. Plus, asking a hunk to apply sunscreen on your back can be a great icebreaker.

Helplines in the UK

If you need help or advice on anything related to sexual health or if you feel unsafe, here are some UK helplines that are available 24/7:

  • The Terrence Higgins Trust: 0808 802 1221
  • Galop: 0800 999 5428
  • Victim Support: 08 08 16 89 111

Above all, have fun this summer, but remember that your safety is the most important thing. Stay protected and aware of your surroundings, and you’re sure to have the time of your life.
