When Arámis’s parents found out he was gay, they sent him to Bible camp for several years, an experience that sent him into a deep and dangerous depression. Things were bleak for a while – until his grandparents moved in with the family. Warm and accepting, they always hinted that they’d love him no matter who he loved. Armed with this knowledge, Arámis eventually built up the courage to come out to them, and did so into open arms. This proved to be a “pivotal moment” in his life, which resulted in improved relations with his parents, active involvement in the queer community, and a deep, deep sense of pride in his identity.
