When John Bronston first took his boyfriend to a large family gathering, his mother introduced him to family members as John’s “friend.” Upset by this casual microaggression, John confronted his mother after dinner and let her know just how it made him feel. The conversation must have had an impact. Fast forward over a year later to another family gathering when John brought a new boyfriend home – not only did his mother introduce him to everyone as either his “boyfriend” or “partner,” John’s entire family embraced him with open arms and soon after welcomed him as a member of the family.
