There are many taboo subjects in the black community, in general, from HIV/AIDS to gender expression and sexuality, mental illness ranks among many of the most serious issues that our community faces, and is affected by the most, yet continues to sweep under the rug.

While many of us, live in very religious house holds, that encourage us to simply pray our “demons” away and pour holy oil on the things that affect us, others simply shun the idea of seeking out mental health services, because of the stigmas that have been placed on them by our society. Because of the dual issue of being same gender loving and the issues that one has to face simply because of how they may be viewed by the church, and family because of it, and the burden of being an african american (and the issues that that may cause, especially depending on where you live and the challenges that may be encountered in looking for housing, employment, education, health disparities and with the judicial system) and the burden of simply being human, we very often find unhealthy ways to deal with stress and psychological trauma.

In this session we talk about bettering our mental health and tackling and eradicating the stigmas that go along with doing the right thing–taking care of ourselves.
