The signs being held in this video are questions that were asked to these individuals on a daily basis.

Of course, this is not THE interpretation of this song, this song can be interpreted in many ways. And no, I didn’t base it off Degrassi either, I had no idea that this song was in Degrassi until much research.

I interpreted this song to mean that the body is a cage because you’re born in a body that isn’t your real gender. The mind is the key because in your mind you know your ideal gender… and also, in your mind, you can unlock yourself from your body, close your eyes, and see your real self.

” I’m standing on a stage /Of fear and self-doubt/ It’s a hollow play/But they’ll clap anyway” I saw this to mean that a transgender person will try to disguise them self as their body’s gender in order to be normal. Really, they’re hollow inside, but that’s what everyone else wants. Nobody wants a boy in a women’s body to want to pursue to become a man.

“I’m living in an age/That calls darkness light/Though my language is dead/Still the shapes fill my head” I’ve constantly had people tell me that it is getting better without proof that it actually is. The shapes, as you can see in my video, are the symbols for male and female. In my mind, I don’t see gender at all (rather, I’m “genderblind”) which is my “language” of seeing gender. I don’t categorize male or female when I see a person. Like any human being, I categorize, but my categories may be based off of other physical features.

“I’m living in an age/Whose name I don’t know” What is going on today? There’s nothing really notable like there was 10 years ago, except for the election of our first African American president. Will this be the age of legal marriage? Have us gender-variant individuals been forgotten? “We take what we’re given/Just because you’ve forgotten/
That don’t mean you’re forgiven” We should have more rights than this. We are human, too. We deserve health care. We deserve marriage. We deserve not being treated as second-class citizens.

“I’m living in an age/That screams my name at night/But when I get to the doorway/There’s no one in sight” I keep seeing all these chances that something will change, and it’s my time to stand up for what I believe in… however, soon enough, I see that nothing has changed.
