“Gay Men and Sex Addiction: A Different Treatment Approach” a webinar lecture by Dan Lacovara, MA.
Note: The first half of this lecture focusing on the sex addiction cycle wasn’t recorded, so we are planning to present again in the future. At that time, this lecture will be restructured for the general public to attend.
Description: Diagnosis and treating sex addiction presents numerous challenges in general for clinicians. When working with gay men and men who have sex with men (MSM), there are additional factors a therapist must consider. These include issues around the experience of unique traumas, sexual practices within the gay community, the impact of drug use and a client’s experience of external and internalized homophobia. Clinicians must be aware of these issues while also attending to the countertransference that can occur in this therapeutic dynamic. This lecture will look at the issues and provide therapists with a better understanding of how to effectively treat this population.
Dan Lacovara is a staff clinical associate at Center for Healthy Sex working with sex addiction and love addiction. Dan’s primary focus is on providing individual treatment to men with sex compulsivity and addiction issues and to women struggling with love addiction. Before joining CHS, Dan worked at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center, where he worked with clients with substance abuse and mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and grief and loss. In addition, he designed the curriculum for and co-facilitated the Center’s first Sexual Compulsives Group for men.
He has participated in Group Psychotherapy Association of Los Angeles (GPALA) trainings on psychodynamic and relational work in group therapy and with the California Association of Mental Health (CAMFT) on depression and its impact on intimate relationships. He has also received training in attachment theory and Bowenian approaches to individual and couples treatment at the Bowen Institute in San Diego.
In addition, Dan held the position of Administrative Director for Change Management at the Mount Carmel Guild Behavioral Services (MCGBS), a seventeen-site mental health clinic in Newark, New Jersey, treating the serious and persistently mentally ill. There he worked with clinical and administrative leadership, helping the organization to achieve first-time accreditation by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) to ensure MCGBS programs met the highest standards for quality. He graduated with a masters of arts in clinical psychology from Antioch University, and received his undergraduate degree in English Literature from Georgetown University.
