At a men’s prison in Vacaville, California, about two dozen transgender women have been learning to live side-by-side with more than 2,000 cisgender men. Some live in huge dormitories, some in single cells. In spite of the daily challenges they face, they’re working to help change institutional policies and carve out a space where, even while incarcerated, they are free to be themselves.
