LGBTQ+ – alternate gender or sexual orientation, is just one part of a child’s identity or personality, but are we prepared to understand that?

What does a child go through when they have to grapple with family hostility in addition to the challenges of trying to process this aspect of their identity?

Let’s hear it from them – 3 young and inspirational individuals who are making a positive change in the lives of the LGBTQ community.

Divya Dureja – a poet, events curator, psychologist, preceptor and creative strategies consultant. She is a three time TEDx Speaker with a nuanced body of work in poetry, film and performance, seminars and training on women and queer issues across different countries. Through her poetry she has addressed the taboo around menstruation, abortion rights, vaginismus, homosexuality, gender dysphoria and physical disabilities. Her poetry film on Vaginismus – a lesser known and highly underdiagnosed female sexual dysfunction has been screened at Film festivals in over 8 countries. She designs and conducts workshops in skill development programmes with corporates, university and school students on the themes of feminine hygiene, sexuality, mental health, and relationships; and serves as a panelist on LGBT themed seminars.

Arpit Bhalla
Founder, The Quart Project
Arpit is a gender and sexuality rights activist and currently an HIV & Family healthcare counselor with an international organization. He came out as queer individual about 5 years ago and has been vocal about gender and sexuality rights ever since. He uses various art forms such as poetry, photography, painting, drama, dance, music, etc. as his creative outlets. His accomplishments include founding the Gender Equality Cell at Hansraj College, The Quart Project, a queer art project and The Red Festival, the first ever queer festival by sexual and gender minorities for the mainstream community and is also the first ever festival for the LGBTQIA+ community organized by any government entity in India.

Zainab Patel
Zainab is a transgender person and is one of the petitioners in the National Legal Services Authority v. Union of India case on transgender rights. She is the National Manager Health and Human Rights at the UNDP country office in India. An MBA in HR, Zainab also freelances as a D&I consultant, trainer/facilitator and supports companies in various industries in change processes towards more diversity in leadership. With over 20 years of national and international work experience, she has in-depth knowledge and expertise in the design and implementation of programs and strategies that foster diversity, equality and inclusion on LGBTI issue and gender.
