Depression in gay men is usually rooted in discrimination and victimization from childhood and adolescence.
Depression affects gay men at higher rates than the straight people, and gay boys are more likely than straight students to report high levels of drug use and feelings of depression.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is the third leading cause of death among people age 10 to 24 in the United States. Gay boys in grades 7-12 are twice as likely to attempt suicide than straight boys.
If you think someone is at immediate risk of self-harm:
• Call 911 or your local emergency number.
• Stay with the person until help arrives.
• Remove any guns, knives, medications, or other things that may cause harm.
• Listen, but don’t judge, argue, threaten, or yell. Listen and Understand
If you think someone is considering suicide, get help from a crisis or suicide prevention hotline. Try the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255.
